POLYSTYRENE CHAIRS
Made from imported polystyrene, this domestic 1920s-style chair is full size (85 x 45 x 53 cm). The corrugation along the rails and the form work on either side of the splats suggests it was made from refrigerator packing foam (make unknown).
This reproduction of a late Roman imperial chair is constructed of imported and local styrene. The sturdy set front legs are indicative of the large styrene packaging used in various deep freezers produced for the local market. The detailed back rail echoes the styrene used to pack imported rice-cookers.
The peak and subsequent depression of the global economy, during which white goods consumption was minimal and quality packing styrene scarce, created the environment for this adaptive polystyrene hybrid construction style.
